Not a lot of reason to turn se jerna into seljerna.  But then, why did
we turn grand father into grandfather back when the two were synonymous,
as I presume they once were.  If people come to think of a concept as a
single word, or as worthy of a single word, they will do so.

In the case of seljerna, there is no advantage in doing so, and even a
negative one, since the compound is longer than the separate components.
In other cases, using sel allows you to use a 3-letter rafsi for the second
term, giving a significant advantage.   And f course if you add extra
terms on the front, you also gain advantage in word length.
