I said "Yes I do: if I don't get paid, I don't eat."

In English this is a joke: "why (for what reason)" is the same as "why (for
what purpose)". Pete said "to eat" (meaning paid for eating), but I jokingly
interpreted it as "to eat" meaning "in order to eat").
